After Heavy Rain or Flooding: A Foundation Checklist
Baton Rouge gets intense rain, and flooding events have affected many homes in the region. After the water recedes, a few checks can catch problems early.
Check the outside
- Look for soil washed out from under or beside the slab
- See whether water is still standing near the foundation
- Check that downspouts and drains are clear and flowing away
Check the inside
- Look for new cracks, especially at door and window corners
- Test doors and windows for sticking
- Note any musty smells or damp spots
Check the crawl space
If the home is raised, look through the access hatch if it is safe to do so. Standing water, wet insulation or damp soil mean moisture needs attention. If you are unsure, have a professional look.
Take it slowly
Soil that has been saturated can keep shifting for weeks. A small change is worth documenting with photos and dates, because it may continue as the ground dries.
When to call
Call for an inspection if cracks are new and growing, floors are visibly uneven, or water keeps returning to the same spot.
